Mark-making has, probably even before the existence of those Indonesian cave walls, been viewed as an act of creation and hominid genius. Concurrently it is an act of marring, obfuscation: the parietal on nature millions of years unchanged; cotton, linen and paper removed from reuse; the built world around us our greatest example. The works of Kolya Nemoi are both containers of potent expression and diffident partial masks. The acts of their creation erase earlier iterations even as those moments result in the final outcomes. They are carnal and fraught and, like a package never to be opened, maintain the temptation of Pandora’s pithos. There is a concentrated fragmentation throughout, recognizability bending to abstraction, bold expressionism merging with tender impressions of handled color. If there’s an interiority contained leakage might be expected.
