RAFAL SKOCZEK: Pure Model

September 14 - October 12, 2024

Opening Friday, September 13    18 - 20h

Rafal Skoczek works in a metabolic method, digesting the forms and material around him. Instead of the found he reacts to what appears ‘at hand’. The limitations of the environments he works in are bent creating works that operate across function. Sculpture becomes a place of performance: on stage, in bed, a platform of conversation. Unlike an earlier generation of relational aesthetics, Skoczek sees through a supposed failure in modernism to create works that carry on the utopian visions and community change of a century ago. From the applied social constructivism of Malevich, Suetin and Chashnik through the architectonics of Vantongerloo and DeStijl, he reveals aspirations hidden within the detritus that piles up around us.
